Around 250 chili enthusiasts gathered on Feb. 8 at the Penticton Art Gallery to participate in the much-anticipated Loving Mugs fundraiser. This annual event allowed attendees to savor various mouth-watering chili samples while also supporting a good cause. The night was brimming with live music, laughter, and engaging conversations, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie among the participants.
Curator Paul Crawford emphasized the importance of the event as a means of fostering community bonds, stating, “It’s a ‘friend-raiser,’ it’s community building. If the gallery can serve as that hub where we can all come together and share moments like this, then that’s best of all.” The Loving Mugs fundraiser complements another highly popular event, the Soup Bowls, which occurs later in the year. While Loving Mugs continues to gain popularity, Crawford acknowledges that it has yet to attain the same level of community recognition as the Soup Bowls.
The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the chili competition, with numerous exceptional entries vying for the title of best chili. From the tantalizing heat-packed Highway 97 peach pilsner chili to the delectable white chili from the Dream Cafe, the competition was fierce. Ultimately, the People’s Choice award, for the second consecutive year, went to Cannery Brewing. Chef Thomas Bridson expressed his delight, sharing his secret behind the award-winning chili: “We did some smoked low-and-slow chicken thighs, house chorizo, and lots of Cannery beer in there.”
The event also included other accolades, each showcasing unique chili creations. Highway 97 claimed the Climate Changer award for the beaniest chili, while the Dream Cafe’s creation earned them the title of the most unique chili. Stillfood Bistro secured the Best Vegan Chili award, and Slackwater Brewing’s chili was recognized as the spiciest, receiving the Pepto Bismal award. Lastly, Match Eatery’s chili was celebrated for its delectable toppings.
The Loving Mugs fundraiser not only offered a memorable culinary experience but also provided participants with a recipe book and a personalized mug to take home. According to Crawford, the mug serves as a tangible reminder of the event’s special moments, as he explains, “Every morning you have your coffee, you’re going to remember this moment.” The success of this year’s event has left attendees eagerly anticipating next year’s edition and wondering what culinary delights and community connections it will bring.
